Hotel & Thermal Spa
The Crescent Hotel and Thermal Spa promises its guests something special: 21st century pampering in the elegant surroundings of one of England’s finest Georgian buildings. This is a spa experience as rich in history as it is in healthy minerals.
A warming wallow
Buxton has drawn bathers to its natural thermal water for centuries. The Romans established a bath house here, Mary Queen of Scots famously longed for Buxton’s springs from her prison cell, and during the 19th century the town rode a wave of interest in the health benefits of hydrotherapy. Back then, the Crescent – a sweeping masterpiece of 18th century architecture – was the place to take the waters.
But Buxton’s star fell, and for decades the Crescent has lain empty and unloved. The aim of this ambitious project is to return the building to its pomp, and restore Buxton’s status as the spa capital of Britain.
The renovated spa will bring together the very best of the traditional and the modern. At the heart of the complex will be the original thermal pool, fed by mineral water from a nearby ancient spring (St Ann’s Well) that emerges deep from the earth at a temperature of 27°C. In addition, there will be pampering treatments featuring mineral-packed mud, specially tailored healthy lifestyle programmes, and a host of relaxation and leisure facilities including an indoor/outdoor pool with water features, a sauna, steam and ice rooms, a fitness studio and a beauty salon.
A five-star stay
Adjoining the spa complex will be a five-star hotel, allowing guests to enjoy a truly luxurious spa break. This will be accommodation with all the trimmings, its 79 tastefully furnished bedrooms and suites offering all that a modern traveller expects. Like the spa, the hotel will combine modern comforts with gracious hospitality. The splendid 18th century ballroom – known as the Assembly Room – will be fully refurbished, and there will be a spa café and several function rooms incorporating period features. And with a restaurant and two bars to choose from, guests can round-off a relaxing spa day with an evening of excellent food and drink.
